Easy to understand that Tupac is the "thug" of hip-hop while Nicolas Machiavel is the "thug" of politics. But beyond the "buzz word", there is a direct link between these two characters. In fact, during his stay in prison, Tupac read The Prince of Machiavelli and this reading profoundly affected him. So much so that once he got out of prison, he adopted a new artist name: Makaveli and released two albums where he takes up some central ideas of Machiavelli's political thought. One finds there the same criticism of the moral ideals. Tupac's lyrics also show that we must understand the world starting from the reality just like Machiavelli did with politics. In a sense, by leading a real thug life, Tupac would reinterpret the political realism that emanates from Machiavelli's work!
