To this day, Homer and Hesiod are arguably the two most famous poets of ancient Greece. What fewer people know, however, is that at the time, one woman was known among the artists most recognized for their poetry: Sappho. Considered the first female writer, Sappho has today become an icon of feminist movements. Originally from the island of Lesbos, she was also known for her poems in which she was declaring her love for women. Not surprisingly, according to some, her poems were probably condemned and destroyed by the theologians of early Christianity and we have only preserved fragments of her work. But no matter what her detractors thought or her, Sappho was quite right when she said "someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us" (fragment 147).
